TextNow Proxies: Keeping Your Number Active
TextNow gives people a US phone number that works over the internet, supported by ads or a subscription. Small businesses use it as a cheap second line for a side business, and freelancers use it to keep a client-facing number separate from their personal phone. TextNow pays attention to the network each session uses, partly because a free calling service attracts abuse and partly because its service is meant for users in the United States and Canada. A ProxyMobile line is one modem holding one AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon SIM in a US city, dedicated to you, and it gives a TextNow session an ordinary carrier address. This page explains what that changes, how to keep a number in good standing, and where a proxy is the wrong answer.
How TextNow looks at your connection
Free calling apps receive a steady stream of abuse, from spam texts to fraud calls, and their defenses include looking at where traffic comes from. Datacenter and hosting addresses, which many VPNs use, are an easy thing for such a service to be cautious about. A carrier address is different: it is the same kind of address a phone on cellular data presents, shared through carrier-grade NAT with many real subscribers. A ProxyMobile line gives TextNow that kind of address from a real US metro.
That is the extent of it. TextNow sets its own rules on who can use the service and from where, and its terms prohibit using the service to get around those rules. If you are outside the regions TextNow serves, a proxy is not a legitimate way in. The line is for people who already use TextNow within its rules and want a steadier, cleaner connection for it.
Keeping a number in use
TextNow numbers on the free plan are recycled if the number goes unused for a period that TextNow publishes in its help pages, and paid options exist to lock a number. A side business that relies on its TextNow number should treat activity and account standing as the priority. A stable connection helps in a small way: the sessions that keep the number active look like the same person on the same network each time, instead of a random selection of Wi-Fi hotspots.
If the number is important to your business, the honest advice is to pay TextNow for the number lock rather than rely on activity alone. A proxy does not protect a number from recycling.
Calls, texts and data use
TextNow calls travel as internet voice, which prefers UDP. Our lines support UDP over SOCKS5, so run TextNow through a SOCKS5 tunnel app that forwards UDP, with mobile data turned off on the phone. A 4G line at 20 to 45 Mbps is ample for voice; a 5G line at 50 Mbps or more is unnecessary unless the same line does other work. Voice and text use very little data, so 15 GB per day is far more than a TextNow line will consume.
On the desktop and web versions, set the proxy in a dedicated browser profile. Texting works through HTTP or SOCKS5; calling from the browser needs a setup that forwards UDP.
- Phone: SOCKS5 tunnel app with UDP, mobile data off.
- Browser: dedicated profile with the line's proxy saved.
- Check the exit IP before opening the app.
- Place one test call after setup to confirm two-way audio.
Sticky, and why one number per line
Keep a TextNow session sticky. Our lines hold the IP until you press rotate, so leave rotation off for any line carrying TextNow. Changing address mid call drops the call, and frequent changes make the account look unstable. One TextNow number per line is the sensible layout for a business number, and the number should belong to the business that owns the line.
TextNow's terms forbid spam, bulk messaging, automated account creation and use of multiple accounts to get around its limits. None of that is something ProxyMobile lines are for, and the network would not hide it anyway: those patterns are visible in the messages, not the IP.
When TextNow refuses to connect
If TextNow reports a network or location problem, first check the ProxyMobile dashboard for an exit IP. A blank field means the modem is re-attaching to the carrier, which usually resolves within a minute. Next confirm the phone's mobile data is off and the tunnel is forwarding all traffic, since a split path can show two different addresses. If the app still objects to the connection, contact TextNow support; do not cycle through rotations to try to find an address it likes, which only adds noise to the account. Our 24/7 support by email and Telegram bot can confirm the line's own status.
Setting up a TextNow proxy on ProxyMobile
- Order a line in the metro closest to you or your business.
- Install a SOCKS5 tunnel app with UDP forwarding and disable mobile data.
- Confirm the exit IP shows a US carrier and the right city.
- Open TextNow, sign in and place a test call.
- Leave the line sticky and consider TextNow's number lock for a business number.
TextNow proxy questions
Can I use TextNow from outside the US with a proxy?
TextNow decides where its service is available, and its terms prohibit getting around that. ProxyMobile lines are for people already using TextNow within its rules.
Will the proxy stop my number being recycled?
No. Recycling depends on activity and plan. If the number matters, pay TextNow to lock it.
Should I rotate if TextNow will not connect?
No. Check the dashboard, the tunnel and mobile data first, then contact TextNow support. Hunting for a new address adds noise to the account.
